Is 29" a good vertical for 15 going on 16 outside hitter?
I am a 6' sophomore in high school and I have a 9'6" standing vertical and 29" standing vertical. Is this average? Am I good where I'm at?
Those numbers don't quite add up for me. If you're 6' tall, your standing reach is around 7'10" so if you had a 29" standing vertical you would be touching about 10'3" or thereabouts. Touching 9'6" isn't bad, but that's only 18" above the height of the men's net.
I don't particularly get too impressed with a player's vertical jump. I'm much more interested in a player's reach. On the men's net, which is 8' high, a good hitter should be able to get up and over the block. Most blockers can touch about 9'6" when they're blocking, so if your vertical allows you to touch at least a foot above that, you'll match up well against a good block.
When I was coaching a men's college team, I liked to see my outsides touch at least 10' and preferably much higher. I had a guy who was touching well over 11' and he had a very good hitting efficiency percentage (about 0.410). The guys would compete to see who could touch the top of the antenna, which is 11'.
